Books to read if you're planning a vacation in "Dover", sorted by average review score:

LA Mer (The Sea): Three Symphonic Sketches (Dover Miniature Scores)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 2003)
Average review score:

Musical MechanicsThis is a cute little book of direct copies of one of the early editions of this work. If you like Debussy's atmosferes and orchestal colors, having this blueprint can provide you with insights on how the magic it's done.

Limbert Arts and Crafts Furniture: The Complete 1903 Catalog (Dover Books on Antiques and Furniture)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1992)
Average review score:

Dover's mission furniture catalogsWhile Charles Limbert is less well known than the Stickley brothers, some of his furniture was, to the European eye, even better. Sadly, the line drawings of the original catalog are extremely ugly (see nos 79 and 80 which are reproduced as photographs on the cover, you would scarcely recognise them!). I did use this to build a glazed bookcase (no 306), which must be some sort of a recommendation, for I haven't used any of the other catalogs yet. And the book is very cheap!

Little Indian Girl Paper Doll (Dover Little Activity Books)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (February, 1993)
Average review score:

Historic CostumesSuzy, the Indian girl, wears the different costumes of the Southwest Indians. The book includes a Sioux ghost dance dress, a Hopi dress with her hair done in large buns on each side, and many more. The dresses are lovely, and this is the perfect book for young children, as the material is very durable. They will need help cutting it out, though, because the paper is so thick. But this would be a perfect stocking stuffer, or a nice birthday present for a small girl. I'd say the age range would be from 3-8.

Make Your Own Aquarium With 29 Stickers (Dover Little Activity Books)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (August, 1995)
Average review score:

cute fun for kidsThe title of this activity book explains it all. Kids can design their own fantasy aquarium using the provided stickers and full-color aquarium background. The stickers themselves are of a very high quality. They can be re-used and depict tropical fish such as gourami and discus. So, if you have a kid who likes fish or has an aquarium of his/her own, you really can't go wrong...it's only 80 cents. You can afford it. :o)

North American Indian Motifs: 391 Different Copyright-Free Designs (Dover Electronic Clip Art Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1997)
Average review score:

Perhaps too diverseGreat clip art. Not as many illustrations as other books in the series. Everything from Aztec to Tlingit to eastern woodland to pueblo to plains - thereby not allowing many illustrations from each as one might like. Await volume solely on Southwest! The legends in the clip art are annoying but can be easily dealt with if you can crop the graphics.

Optical Illusions Quilt Designs (Dover Design Library)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 1994)
Average review score:

All charts no wordsNot a bad book if you were looking for inspiration as it contains patchwork blocks and graphical representations of what a made up quilt might look like. No explanation of what makes an optical illusion quilt though.

Ornamental Ironwork: 670 Illustrations (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 1998)
Average review score:

This is just "clip-art", no words or photosNot what I expected. Just as the title says, this is 670 illustrations. There is no text, no photos. Just illustrations.

Peasant Iron-On Transfer Patterns (Dover Needlework Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (May, 1985)
Average review score:

Pleasant PeasantEd Sibbett Jr. designs his patters so that they are easy to use in any craft project. These patterns are bold and are a joy to embroider, stencil, or just look at. I've used several of these patterns on my own clothing and housewares and they look stunning. Some of the patterns are a little bolder than some people might like. I reccommend checking out some of Ed Sibbett's other iron on transfer books if you are looking for something subdued.

Photo Archive of Famous Places of the World (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 1993)
Average review score:

If you keep track of your travels, than this book is for youWhen I saw this book, I immediatly realized what a great idea it could be to keep track of the places I travelled to. The book contains over 120 black and white photographs that capture the most famous sites of the world: in USA, Mexico, Europe, North Africa, Asia, Australia and Pacific. What I do is I record in the book a date when I visited the specific place and brief memories associated with my visit. The book also keeps me motivated to go places where I have not gone yet. What is not great about the book is that there are much more other beatiful places which are not included. But... maybe you could be the one to update the book for any new places you have discovered.

Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations (Dover Books on Advanced Mathematics)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (May, 1989)
Average review score:

Do Not Try This Book At Home. This book is dense in the sense of Rudin (actually much denser); it packs a lot of material into a little space and that material can take hours for a grad student to decode. In other words, its the perfect textbook for an independent study! As a reference book, this is a good introduction to the state of differential equations *before* Lorenz equations were understood. Keep in mind that this was written in Russa during the Stalin era, and so some of the terminology is different. In particular, they refer to Gromwall's Inequality as "The Fundamental Inequality." The proofs are not that elegant, but they'll give a modern student a good idea of where some numerical techniques come from. Without guidance, though, an untrained reader could be left completely confused as to the state of differential equations in the 1990's. Don't try this at home.
